 Hi Everyone!

Today I read an article about news media literacy and the perception of bias and interpretation of news that definitely grabbed my attention. I did find this article a bit long winded, as it repeated itself which was unnecessary in my eyes and it took me quite a while to finish everything. I definitely think differently about media literacy and have a better understanding for its importance nowadays especially.

I believe that the impact of digital media is good in many ways as many people can share ideas and become connected with others, but we all need to be aware as literacy now a days anyone can publish anything online. A piece of information from this article that shocked me is that many digital media companies have been lacking to help users in Ireland. Over 62% of Ireland worries about misinformation online and this shows me that not enough people are informed about fake news and what to do when it's come across.

There was a study done to show a significant development in the fight against disinformation in Europe, Unfortunately reports showed that there was a huge downfall of content and code structure so it wasn't much help for the public. I was also shocked when I read that Microsoft and Google did not report on Irish specific initiatives to support critical thinking and Digital Media literacy. There is a Piller E scheme which aims to enable privacy compliant access to data for fact checking but they were largely inadequate to assist in delivery.

Before I read this article I did not realise that misinformation was this big of a problem in Ireland. It is also a huge problem in Northern Ireland as there is over 61% of people that said they read about fake news about Covid-19 and have made no action for it, and over 83% share information with friends and family. The biggest problem of misinformation is that some people cant tell the difference between real and fake news and they could send this information on to friends or family. This is why this is such a big problem and why we need the right tools provided for us.

New Media Literacy is used to recognise misinformation, They emphasise that we need to critically analyse and engage with news so we become informed about media literacy. Hostile media effect refers to the study where both party's on opposite sides of an idea seems to be identical. HME's perception of bias is that our personal involvements generates a bias for any story as people tend to prefer and search for what they agree on rather than something that challenges them. NML highlight journalists that are challenged with pressure and competition to get the audience attention and that many journalists bias is not on what they believe or support but rather what the audience does so they can seek more attention from the audience.

There was a structured interview done on a random group of people to see what the publics perception of news bias is. It was strange as people didn't believe they were bias even though they knew they were being influenced by their beliefs, even though they were bias they realised numerous of ways that the news bias operates and promotes new products, For example they saw that bias was evident in the word choice as they were positive for some of the connotations and more negative towards others. Even though they were able to point out a couple things here and there it was quite obvious to NML that research and education efforts must be put into account and that educating about personal bias is just not enough.

Bye Everyone!
