Study Skills

 Hi Everyone!

This week I watched three videos for my IDM assignment and I  have a few thoughts that I would like to share to all of you about these videos. All three videos were different so I have a couple things to share today!

The first video is about the three best science based study tips. I found this video very interesting as it gave me many tips that I thought wouldn't work when studying, for example I always thought the more you tried to study a day the better grades you would get, apparently that is not the case. If you use science you can study less and get better grades! The three methods that were recommended were Quizzing, Spacing and mixing. I didn't understand how these three were the best out of all the methods of studying. They just felt too simple to be the best study skills, But these are actually the most difficult ways to study as they make you challenge yourself a lot. Scientific studies show that the more you struggle in studying the better grades you will get. I know it didn't make sense to me either, But the harder you work, the more brain activity you have used which creates more connections and the information will stick to you easier.

The second video is five active reading habits for textbook assignments. This video gave five very quick and simple tricks to honestly improve your active reading habits. The tips he gave us sounded very strange to me until he started explaining them and it just made more sense than reading over and over again until I understood the text. I wont go through all of them but the strangest tip he gave was to read backwards. I know sounds weird, But it actually makes the most sense out of all of them. When you read backwards he doesn't literally mean read the text backwards, basically you go to the end of the text read the summary, look at the vocabulary, look at the review items and just figure out what the text is about before reading it so when you go to read it, It will be really simple to understand and you wont have to read over it.

The third video is about media literacy. My understanding of media literacy is that it makes people understand what is reliable on the internet and to understand what is the truth and what is false. The advantages of media literacy in my eyes is that it properly informs people about how to identify relevant information from sources online. I believe especially after watching the video that all students should be learning about media literacy, as it gives them the ability to differentiate between different types of sources from the media and they learn how to make a responsible message for the media like some of the examples Andrea Quijada showed in her video. I understand now that people who are media literate intend to promote awareness of media influence and they do not try to be factual or throw statistics at you about the media, but they rather just have brought up the awareness to ask the right questions about what you read online, or what you watch.

These are all of my thoughts about the videos I have watched today, Bye!
