Media Literacy

 Hi Everyone!

Today I read a very interesting article about news media literacy and the perceptions of bias and interpretation of news. I did find this article a bit difficult and too long winded, as it repeated itself quite a lot and it took a lot of time for me to finish everything. I did find the article interesting and there is definitely things I think about differently after reading the article.

The impact of Digital Media is good in many ways as many people can share ideas and become connected with others, but we all need to be aware as literally now a days anyone can publish anything online. I was shocked as many Digital Media companies have been found lacking to help users in Ireland. Over 62% of Ireland worries about misinformation online and this already shows me that not enough people are informed about false news and what to do when it's found. There was a study that showed a significant development in the fight against disinformation in Europe, But reports showed that there was a huge downfall of content and code structure so it wasn't that much help for the public. I was shocked when I read that Microsoft and Google did not report on Irish specific initiatives to support critical thinking and Digital Media literacy. There is a Piller E scheme which aims to enable privacy compliant access to data for fact checking but they were largely inadequate to assist in delivery. I was just shocked when I read about this as I did not realise it was this big of a problem especially for people in Ireland. It is also a huge problem in Northern Ireland as there was over 61% that said they read about false news about Covid-19 and did nothing about it, and over 83% share information with friends and family. The problem is that other people could believe the misinformation and send to family and friends and cause unnecessary panic, Thats why it is such a big problem and why people need the right tools and knowledge about false news.

NML emphasise that we need to critically analyse and engage with news so we become informed about Media Literacy. HME's perceptions of bias is that our personal involvements generates a bias for any story as people tend to prefer and search for what content support their beliefs and something that they agree on rather than something that challenges them. NML highlights journalist that challenge with pressure and competition to get audience attention and that many journalists bias is not on what they believe or support but rather what the audience does so they can seek more attention from the audience. There was a structured interview done on a random group of people to see what the publics perception of news bias is. It was strange as people didn't believe they were bias even though they knew they were being influenced by their beliefs, even though they were bias they realised numerous of ways that the news bias operates and promotes new products, For example they saw that bias was evident in the word choice as they were positive for some of the connotations and more negative towards others. Even though they were able to point out a couple things here and there it was quite obvious to NML that research and education efforts must be put into account and that educating about personal bias is just not enough.

Bye Everyone!

My favourite part of the blog post is how you address the audience and you explained what you are going to be discussing. I can see that there is information is research but i do suggest that you cite your sources and us e reference for the reason being that myself and other readers may want to know more about the information being discussed. As for my question, what does the NML do? And what is the HME? Other than those things it's all well written.

After reading your blog post I thought it was a well-researched and constructed blog. I really like how you addressed your audience, that is something I have forgotten to incorporate in my own blog posts and will make sure I do in the future. At first glance, I enjoyed the layout and style of the post. The background colours are bright & colourful and the text is easy to read. I also liked how you backed up your points with facts and statistics which made the post feel credible and trustworthy.

However, there were a few minor things that I feel could be improved to make this post even better. As I was reading the post I felt the information was condensed in the two larger paragraphs, perhaps you could split up the information into smaller paragraphs to make it easier for the reader to digest the information. While reading the post I asked myself the question what is the NML? What does NML stand for? Similarly, what is the HME? And what does it stand for? Lastly, I think it would be a good idea to cite your sources. Overall I thought it was a well written blog with plenty of detail and research which made for an interesting read.

  3. From reading this post, I felt it was very well thought out and researched blog. The paragraphs were very well structured and the Language used within this post was very suitable and made it very easy to read for all audiences that may read these blogs. The information that was used within this blog also may have helped give a good understanding about the topic to those that may not have read the article prior to reading this post.

Although this was a good blog I feel that explaining a bit more about NML and HME would've made this blog a lot better especially to help the audience who may not know what they stand for , Maybe for future reference you could write the full name out beside the abbreviation in brackets to allow the reader to have a better understanding.

Overall, I feel this was a very well written blog.
