Active Reading

 Hi Everyone!

Today I have read a very interesting paper about how Ernest Balajthy used students constructed questions to encourage active reading. Ernest was a teacher at Beaver College, Pennsylvania and he made this paper in 1984, Feb. I also read two other papers before this one about active reading techniques which I would like to compare to with this one.

After reading Ernest's paper I have realised it is primarily aimed at students and teachers, especially for teachers to help their poor readers enhance their retention. He tells us how important it is as students to construct questions about the structure of the text as it improves our narrative material. In his text he gave a lot of self-questioning strategies, for example the ReQuest Manzo procedure(1969)-this strategy improves students text analysis, So you read the first sentence of a paragraph and close the book, The teacher then asks questions and the students cannot continue to read until they have answered all the questions from just the one sentence. He also talks about how good teaching in a classroom will improve the literal interpretation for a student. This is why he gives all these different strategies, to trick students into asking questions which will make it more interesting for them and will direct them down the right path.

I believe there are other points of view to this topic as I believe many people would disagree with the strategies that he listed. I think this as many of his strategies are time consuming, for example when he mentions the SQ3R technique even though the two papers before this one agreed with this technique also for students, I have watched videos about active reading and they disagreed with this technique as it was time consuming like I mentioned and they suggested other strategies that were just as effective for me and it took me less of the amount of time. I believe after reading three papers about active reading that we need a mixture of strategies as I think it will improve my active reading skills the best if i mix them together. I do feel that all of them are equally as effective in the short run, But the strategies that take longer to do like the self questioning strategies that Ernest mentioned would definitely help me in the long run more as I feel like I'm using more of my mind which makes it harder for me and it will help me in my next active reading texts more as I will remember it better rather than making it quick and easy for me just for me to forget about what I read a week later.

These are all of my thoughts for today about the active reading papers I have read today, Talk to you soon!
