Production Process
Hi Everyone!
Today I watched a few videos about design thinking and the production of film making/documentary. Design thinking in my words is a process that solves problems to prioritise the customers needs. Design thinking also makes you think from a customers perspective as you are doing something to prioritise the customer so you need to get into their mindset to figure out the problem. Design thinking is a set of tools to help solve the problem in a creative way, For example when there is a problem in a company, the company will use design thinking to create a new product altogether. I think it is important to be aware of design thinking as it is extremely useful for tackling problems that are unknown, creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions and adapting a hands on approach in prototype and testing. It is very evident to me that design thinking is a very flexible process used by professionals and its good for many projects associated with digital media. There are five steps for design thinking but you don't actually need to follow them that's what makes it so flexible and it's also a very useful tool for the future for me.
The process for film making/documentary is split up into three parts which I didn't expect. The three processes are called pre-production, production and post-production. When they mentioned these processes I already could think of an idea of what these parts included. In pre-production this includes the decision of how the film is made, writing of the film, casting the crew, finding locations to set the film, making a budget and making a schedule. In production this is basically just the general production of the actual film/documentary, This also the most expensive part as you have to pay all the crews salaries. In post-production this involves picture editing, visual effects, colour correction, sound effects, This is the longest part as it can take months even years to perfect and complete.
After watching all the videos the most interesting part to me was the B-roll step. This step is basically the step where all the shots/details in the film are made. This step is made to make the film/documentary interesting to watch, For example a part of the film includes an interview with one person and if you keep just that one person talking with nothing else it would be super boring! This is where the B-roll comes in and all the shots you took, you use them for this part and have the shots play and the persons voice in the background just to give the audience some imagery and also to make it more interesting to watch.
